As a result the scenery, costumes, and mis-en-scène are full of interesting references. Obviously Coppola, together with art director Thomas Sanders and costume designer Eiko Ishioka, gave a lot of thought to what was happening in the arts both in England and Mitteleuropa at the fin-de-siècle when the film takes place. ![]() ![]() Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula was the subject of a recent post. ![]() ![]() One individual wrote somewhere complaining there were no color pictures (I suggested a box of crayons). Of course, it garnered the usual brick-bats from those who complained that the encyclopedia should have covered topics they were interested in. The book sold well, and received much praise. It took six years of writing- including revisions, additions, and the editing of page proofs- before it all went to press, becoming The Encyclopedia of the Sword (Greenwood Press, 1995), in the process. ![]() I mentioned to my editor that if we could sell my book by the pound, we'd make a fortune. The completed manuscript was over two thousand pages long, not including pictures, and weighted a solid thirty-five pounds. ![]() From what I could tell, there had never been a single volume that embraced so many possibilities so, in 1989, I began cranking out my initial draft on a standard Smith-Corona typewriter (if anyone remembers what those things are). Having a broad knowledge of fencing-related topics, it seemed logical to pursue a project encompassing the various incarnations of the sword: history, sport, movies, biographies, literature, music, books, weapons, and technical minutiae. ![]() ![]() In time, I thought about writing books on fencing. ![]() ![]() ![]() She wants us, women and men, to seek the unknown, saying “it is the unknown with all its disappointments and surprises that is the most enriching.” She sees big-city life, with all its variety, motivating individuals to restrict their acquaintance to others like them, exchanging the opportunity presented by the unknown for the familiarity of the comfortable. Lindbergh champions the idea of seeking out the unknown. " Red, White & Royal Blue is outrageously fun. Soon Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret romance with a surprisingly unstuffy Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations and begs the question: Can love save the world after all? Where do we find the courage, and the power, to be the people we are meant to be? And how can we learn to let our true colors shine through? Casey McQuiston's Red, White & Royal Blue proves: true love isn't always diplomatic. What at first begins as a fake, Instragramable friendship grows deeper, and more dangerous, than either Alex or Henry could have imagined. It pushes Henry over some kind of edge, melted and overwhelmed on the lush bedclothes. ![]() Heads of family, state, and other handlers devise a plan for damage control: staging a truce between the two rivals. McQuiston focuses on faces generally at these moments and eyes and generally the characters disappear into a mosaic of body parts, but generally not the active or pertinent body parts for the physical acts. And when the tabloids get hold of a photo involving an Alex-Henry altercation, U.S./British relations take a turn for the worse. ![]() There's only one problem: Alex has a beef with the actual prince, Henry, across the pond. ![]() Handsome, charismatic, genius-his image is pure millennial-marketing gold for the White House. When his mother became President, Alex Claremont-Diaz was promptly cast as the American equivalent of a young royal. ![]() What happens when America's First Son falls in love with the Prince of Wales? ![]() ![]() ![]() Then this beautifully illustrated work of art reminiscent of Robert Crumb and Otto Dix, becomes so much more. As just a family drama, this novel delivers. It's why Karen wishes she was a monster - to be safe from those she sees in real life. Her neighborhood is a scary place and so is dealing with her mother's late-stage cancer and her older brother's drug-dealing and pimping. Reyes is an aspiring artist and her story is told in her perspective with detailed drawings filled with B-movie horror monsters from her beloved matinees, all sketched by a very talented schoolgirl with a Bic pen in her spiral notebook. This debut novel by Emil Ferris tells the story of 10-year-old Karen Reyes, a girl growing up during the turbulent 1960s in Chicago. But there are a few that transcend this genre. A lot of people put down graphic novels as just comic books and many are little more than that. ![]() |
